BIOGRAPHY
Paul Clouvel
Composer, electroacoustic performer and independent music curator working across contemporary music, sound art and experimental performance.
Paul Clouvel is a composer, electroacoustic music performer and independent music curator whose practice moves between contemporary music, sound art and experimental performance. His work encompasses electroacoustic and mixed music, sound installations, video and live performance.
Alongside his artistic practice, he develops concert programmes, collaborative projects and platforms for the circulation of experimental music. He is the founder and artistic director of elektramusic, an independent music label and concert initiative dedicated to contemporary and experimental music, supported by the renowned composer and performer Meredith Monk, whom he hosted in concert in Strasbourg in May 2013. He also initiated Musiques Éclatées, a festival bringing together classical, contemporary and jazz music, and the Hybrid Series, a series of experimental music events presented in Berlin and across Europe. Across his career, he has organised more than 400 concerts and festivals, creating opportunities for artists and audiences to encounter experimental music in diverse contexts.
His curatorial work is informed by a sustained interest in encounters between artistic disciplines, instrumental and electronic practices, and emerging approaches to sound. Through concerts, recordings and audiovisual projects, he works to create contexts in which experimental music can be presented, documented and shared.
Clouvel studied composition, sound arts and studio electroacoustic composition at the Bourges Conservatory, electroacoustic composition at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon, computer music at IRCAM, and music technology and production at Berklee College of Music in Boston. His studies also include orchestral conducting at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, musicology at Paris-Sorbonne University, and cultural management at the Université de Haute-Alsace. He subsequently completed music business studies at Berklee.
His work has been presented internationally at concert venues, festivals, museums and universities, including the All Ears Contemporary Music Festival in London, the Wintergreen Film and Performing Arts Festival in the United States, the Essl Collection in Austria, the MAMCS in Strasbourg, Gare du Nord in Basel, the University of Sydney, and the Factory in Shenyang. His electroacoustic and video-music works have also appeared at international film festivals including Diagonale in Austria, WRO in Poland and the Miami International Film Festival. His work has been broadcast on radio stations in the Netherlands, Canada, Hungary and France, including France Musique. His first mixed work for piano and electronics received a prize at the Luigi Russolo International Composition Competition. He has also received a SACEM composition prize, three SACEM creation grants, a PRS bursary, and a composer residency and music bursary from the City of Geneva.

“A culture of sound! Paul Clouvel sculpts sound material by dissolving aesthetic categories.”
J. Isselé, DNA
“Paul Clouvel’s musical pieces, very lively and sometimes humorous, are full of references and winks, and are highlighted by a very precise and concise musical writing.”
D. Rambic, DNA
“His work is unlike any other, too intuitive for that. Paul Clouvel perfectly embodies the free figure of today’s musician.”
J. Isselé, DNA
“A clever and well executed piece of text-sound and electroacoustics, sliding back and forth between the realms of musique concrète, contemporary instrumental art music and electroacoustics as such!”
Ingvar Loco Nordin, Sonoloco, on Speech
