Elements III — Paul Clouvel · piano Natalia Górecka

“When you rip off the cloth off the umbrella, is the umbrella still an umbrella?” asks Paul Auster in his City of Glass. It no longer performs its function, then it changes into something else. Probably something untitled. However, the world around has remained the same.

Elements III for solo piano and fixed sound by Paul Clouvel — revised version 2024, dedicated to Natalia Górecka — develops the idea that Auster had. The almost 14-minute piece is based on often persistently repeated motifs, while assuming the pianist’s freedom of performance. The same or similar elements played live by the pianist are included in the playback, creating continuity of sound, interrupted by mechanical cracks and noises. No matter how the pianist changes them, the whole piece remains recognisable in its form.
